Sims Named Pitcher of the Week

PEARL, MS — Mississippi Braves RHP Lucas Sims was named Southern League Pitcher of the Week, August 17-23. During the week, Sims went 2-0 with a 0.79 ERA in two starts. He surrendered just one earned run-a solo homer-and four hits over 11.1 innings pitched. The right-hander struck out 15 and walked six.

Sims, 21, entered the 2015 season ranked by Baseball America as the No. 4 prospect in the Braves system. He joined the Double-A Braves on July 19. With the M-Braves, Sims is 3-2 with a 4.19 ERA in seven starts. He’s struck out 44 batters and walked 26 in 34.1 innings of work. Right-handers are hitting just .145 against Sims. In his past four starts, Sims is 3-0 with a 1.99 ERA and a .133 opponent’s batting average.
Prior to joining the Mississippi club, Sims was 3-4 with a 5.18 ERA in nine starts at High-A Carolina. He was holding right-handers to a .197 average. Baseball America also selected Sims’ curve as the “Best Curveball” among Braves farmhands entering the season. In his final eight starts last season, Sims went 8-0 with a 1.59 ERA at High-A Lynchburg. A native of Lawrenceville, GA, Sims was selected by the Braves in the first round of the 2012 draft.
With 14 games remaining in the 2015 regular season, the Mississippi Braves have a half game lead over Pensacola and Mobile in the Southern League South Division Chase for the BC Powder Championship Series. The Braves have four games remaining in Pensacola before returning to Trustmark Park Friday, August 28 for a five-game set against Biloxi. Mississippi concludes the regular season at Jacksonville.
